MOHAMAD FAIZAL SAMSUDIN discovers a world of friendship and music across language barriers as a fan of Korean boy band Dong Bang Shin KiI DO not understand Korean but the music, vocals and performance of Korean boy band Dong Bang Shin Ki (DBSK) have captured my attention.
The group consists of five members — Xiah Junsu, Micky Yuchun, Hero Jaejoong, U-know Yunho and Choikang Changmin.
DBSK has split up due to issues with its management and three of its members Junsu, Yuchun and Jaejoong have formed a new group, JYJ.
Being a DBSK fan makes me a Cassies, short for Cassiopeia, an official worldwide fan club created for DBSK fans to gather, share news, interest and talk about the group.
It has been more than two years since I became a devoted fan and I keep myself updated with its latest activities.
YouTube introduced me to DBSK. I was searching for Korean dramas to download but DBSK’s Hug music video caught my eye. I was hooked in an instant.
I started to search all related information about it after that.
DBSK performed a concert in Malaysia before it disbanded. I was able to catch JYJ live when the group came here for its album showcase last month.
Junsu is my favourite as he has the best vocals, dance skills and expression when he sings.
When I decided to go to the showcase, I did not have anyone to accompany me. However, I did not let that blow my chances of meeting JYJ.
I did not dare to blink when I was watching the show as I wanted to capture the entire event.
I was screaming and shouting for Junsu again and again. The showcase left me happy throughout the week.
I cannot wait for JYJ’s concert that may be held next year.
Some of my friends make fun of me because I am a boy obsessed with DBSK and JYJ. Well, I saw several other boys during the showcase and many of them are Chinese. The majority of Cassies are girls.
We are all connected with a special relationship that is hard for me to explain. That bond has introduced me to a few other Cassies who were willing to hang out with me during the show.
It felt like the whole world was smiling at me when they mentioned that I am the first and only Malay “fan boy” that they know.
The friendship did not end there. We stayed in touch via Facebook.
In fact, I managed to make friends with Cassies from Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesia, South Korea and Tunisia, among others, via the social network.
DBSK and JYJ unite us all.
Becoming a Cassies has also inspired me to achieve my goals.
I studied Tourism Management at Universiti Teknologi Mara and hope to work in Korea or Japan, specifically with the Malaysian Embassy.
To secure my dream job, I must gain work experience at related organisations in Malaysia.
I have already applied to work in the Foreign Affairs and Tourism Ministries and plan to take the Administrative and Diplomatic Service entrance exam.
The bands have also motivated me to learn Korean.
After discovering DBSK, I started to say “Ahn Nyong Ha Se Yo” instead of “Hello” whenever I make and receive calls from my friends.
They kept asking me, “Do you really need to do that?” but I just smile.
DBSK and JYJ are the most entertaining “Korean Language Teachers” ever!
I also picked up the language from books and watching Korean drama series.
I spent my leisure time at Kinokuniya in KLCC to read more books or related materials when I was studying in Shah Alam.
There is no harm in being obsessed with boy bands as long as you can gain something positive out of it.
Your interest in boy bands should not only allow you to enjoy yourself but also inspire you to do great things.
To all Cassies out there, no matter what happens, keep the faith!

I am the same with him!
I came to the SG showcase alone without friends, and ended up making friends with Cassies who are way younger than me and I still keep in touch with them.
The bond is difficult to explain, it crosses national borders, race, age, gender, prejudice, and convention. But it is a sincere bond – stemming from common love for the boys. God bless the 5 of them <3 They must be some of the luckiest blessed people in the world..
world peace can be achieved easier if there are more people who like the wonderful boys of DBSK/JYJ..

haha..it reminds me of one incident during my student life…i was in library, watching & giggling while watching their interview on youtube n suddenly an unknown boy sneak up beside me to watch the vid too n asked about it..i mentioned to him dat it was a korean boy band called dbsk n unexpectedly he said he knew it becoz he is a korean…wow..i don’t even know we have korean stud in my university…i was so shocked n stunned dat i forgot to ask his name (who knows we can be frenz)..then i told him how to search their interview vid in youtube…then he left me juz like dat…huuu~~

I’m really with him..I’m from malaysia too…I went alone with my friends but we got different seats so we separated but the bond with cassies is really unbelievable…we got along very well and keeps me company eventhough that day I’m getting hard times from my family..I really thought they also bring positives things to me.I learned a lot by liking them seriously not just for ent. like all people around me thought and trying to stop me from liking them.It’s really sad.I’ve tried once to forget them because it’s tiring with all the hateness but I can’t my heart won’t let me..It’s a natural feeling u can’t force it.but none of them know how much happiness,friends,knowledge I’ve got throughout this..it sounds crazy to others how we laugh and cried because of them..maybe because they don’t share the same feelings..I really don’t want to choose between my family and them eventhough my family is more important.my heart is suffering if they ask me to stop..

Wow! We share the same feelings! I’ve once said that being in the Cassiopeia fandom feels like being on a crazy rollercoaster ride in the last year or so..Too many heartstopping news left and right, that sometimes i really do not know what to feel or think anymore. I am mentally drained and emotionally exhausted from all the issues that involve the 5 boys, but what can i do? I really couldn’t turn my back on any of them even if i tried? I love them waaaayyy too much and their importance in my life is beyond what words can explain..I’ve never felt this way towards any other celebrities before, DBSK is part of me now, telling me to forget about them, is like telling me to forget who i am…They are in my heart…in my head….and in my soul..And despite the hardships that loving them bring to me, leaving their side is never an option! i think all cassies are the same worldwide.
you find out about the boys thru some unexpected way, then youre hooked.
you fall in love before you learn their names.
you realize that they are the first and only group that ever left you breathless. literally.
then you finally see them at a concert one day in all your years of fandom and you become hopelessly devoted.
you meet other cassies. you dont know their names but you spend 10 hours together in hoping to see the boys.
after you part ways, its still only natural to keep in touch because of that unspoken bond between everyone of us.
the boys inspire such great things. they make us want to be better people.
i dont think i can be prouder.
cassiopeia will forever be a legend amoungst fanclubs.
we will be a part of the god’s legend.

I once saw a Singaporean Malay fanboy too, he went to DBSK’s second asia tour with us, a group of girls ^^ and he was so energetic during the concert it surprised me. When Junsu (he’s a Junsu fan too) came very near to us, he went “JUNSUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” Lol, it was incredible actually.
