SungKyunKwan Scandal Got a Trouble Start with Low Rating
Despite the popularity that has been garnered by KBS 2TV new drama ‘Sungkyunkwan Scandal’, the drama broke first start with a low rating viewers.
According to rating record released by research firm AGB Nielsen Media Research on the 31st, ‘SungKyunKwan Scandal’ which had first airing on the 30th recorded viewer rating of 6.3% in national basis, in compare to the concurrent timeline broadcast dramas such as MBC ‘Dong Yi’ (27.3%) and SBS ‘Giant’ (20.9%), thus put ‘SungKyunKwan Scandal’ at the significant lowest drama rating on the day.
‘SungKyunKwan Scandal’ is the debut drama of singer turned actor TVXQ Micky Yoochun and also include other line up casts namely Park Min Young, Song Jong Gi, and Yu Ah In, with such youth actors in casts, the drama starts receiving acclaim and led to great interest from viewers.
After announcing the drama’s message broads, there had been numerous testimonies from public, proving its immense popularity. However, once the drama started to broadcast on TV, it’s regretful how the popularity was not shown thus the poor rating performance.

I knew this would happened since all they put in the first EP was already in the previews, I was watching it last night when I saw parts that I’ve already seen in the previews it was quite boring and thats probably why people don’t stick and watch all of it …but I bet the 2nd EP will be MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH more interesting!!! and it’ll get MUCH MUCH MUCH more ratings!!!

Another reason why I want this drama to be successful its because that way Minnie’s drama and probably JJ’new drama will be welcome too. Its not good to see Yunho and now Yoochun falling this way, especially when they carried TVXQ name in their back.

It’s average for Japan, not very low at all. My personal formula for converting Japanese ratings to Korean ratings is to multiply by a factor of 1.66. So 11.2% = 18.6% which is average. Not the best ratings of the season but doing perfectly, respectably, decent.
Popular dramas in Japan:
Hanadan in Japan: 19.7% = 32.7% in Korea
Hana Kimi in Japan: 17.3% = 28.7% in Korea
(yeah, my 1.66 has no scientific nor mathematical basis but it looks about right so I’m sticking to it!)
Anyhoo, I actually have no problem with people saying Jae didn’t act well in that drama because while I thought he improved, I didn’t think he was that great either. However, I still stand by the fact that Sunanare had decent ratings.

SunaNare’s ratings weren’t the highest for that season, but it wasn’t the lowest either. 10-13% ratings for a Japanese drama is average – popular dramas rate 15% or higher. It’s rare for a Japanese drama to reach 20% so when some of them do, they become the highest-rating for that season. One thing I noticed with Japanese dramas though, is no matter how low the rating of the drama gets, they don’t cut the number of episodes and continue airing them up to the usual full 11 episodes.
South Korean dramas, on the other hand, I think rate much higher. Most of their dramas reach 15% and some like Dong Yi and King of Baker reach 30-40%. So I guess, for them, SungKyunKwan Scandal with its single digit rating would be considered as low. I think my only worry for SKK is if KBS decides to cut down the number of episodes because of the ratings. It might affect the flow of the story and that wouldn’t be good.

i watched raw file, i don’t understand what they say at all. but seriously, this drama is good and interesting, its really funny, i watched it and my whole face grinned, all the actor do good job, Yoochun’s acting is definitely not bad at all, really. i love it already!

It’s hard to compete against rating monsters such as Dong Yi and Giant which already have a huge fan following in addition to other dramas that are airing. People aren’t going to drop their dramas to watch Sungkyunkwan Scandal. However, the drama was highly searched on portal sites so perhaps the ones who didn’t tune in earlier are watching it on the internet. There’s still chance for the ratings to increase.

If HTTG wasn’t such a bad drama they probably will survived to IRIS
“You are so beautiful” didn’t have big popularity in Korea. So I don’t considered them as big competidors…sorry. They were more popular overseas.
YC’s drama SKK its different case. They are competing with two big dramas like “Giant” and “Dong Yi” who are in their peak of their success and already gained fellow fans. Giant’s success is so big that they are considering to extend their episodes. TBH Its more difficult to compete against them because they are already established and have already divided the audience for themself.

This is quality drama! Yoochun, Min Young, Joongki and Ah In are terrific actors with lots of chemistry. The storyline is great, the production values are high, the cast is young and beautiful and talented…what’s not to like? Have faith in this drama ^o^

Its not like that. Its just that some of us are just so dissappointed with HTTG. We dont want the same thing to happen. Bcuz different from HTTG which had such bad story/editing/etcetc, SKKS actually have it good. The acting are different also. I wonder if the fans are actually trying hard to be nice when they said something about Yunho’s acting, but for me, even tho i am a big tvxq fan, yunho acting is really bad. he overact every scene. Yoochun is considered as the best actor in the group, so we are hoping for a higher rating. that is all.

I’m really surprised the ratings are so low! Everything indicated a strong or fairly competitive rating – the filming was sophisticated, the acting was OK, the storyline is cute and the promotion was so strong!
Most TVXQ fans would love to see the 5 succeed in whatever they do. It’s not Yunho’s fault (well, i mean putting his acting aside) that HTTG had a really really bad director and scriptwriter (um the storyline did not make sense in the end), but really I don’t comprehend how SeungKyungKwan Scandal’s rating could be the same as HTTG when everything is so much better

I don’t agree…just because you’re disappointed with HTTG, doesn’t mean you should point out how much better SS is…the fact that you didn’t like the story/yh’s acting and that you think YC is the best actor out of the 5, etc. is all subjective….some people might like modern dramas alot more than historical dramas for example….it’s not just based on acting ability or what you personally think is good. Bringing up HTTG just to make yourself feel better about SS is really sad in my opinion.

I actually didn’t mention that “i think YC is the best actor” because honestly, I don’t know who’s the “best” actor. What I said was that it surprised me that the debut rating is pretty low, considering that Sung was a heavily promoted drama, and the setting, scriptwriting is more sophisticated than HTTG, and yet the ratings are similar.
I do think Yunho’s acting (and btw, if I had to say, I am more Yunho-biased than Yoochun-biased, so this is not sth i have against any member ok?) has improved at the latter episodes, but I think most would agree that the first few episodes was quite unnatural and overt. (again, this is my personal opinion) And I think that the script writing is quite obviously not up to par, because a lot of the twists in the middle were not answered in the ending, and the flow of the story was awkward. This points to poor production which is NOT yunho’s fault. However, this indicates that HTTG as a drama itself, may have difficulty in capturing the audience’s attention.
On the other hand, SKK Scandal, at least from epi 1 had interesting and quirky characters. The setting looks sophisticated, the storyline seems to be sth Korean audiences like (Coffee Prince, You’re Beautiful), the historical setting works well (Dong Yi is of Chosun period), the climaxes were well edited and the flow seems to be pretty good. In short, it seems to have all the catchpoints which previous successful Korean dramas contained.
THIS, is why I was surprised that two dramas of different quality would have the same rating. And the reason why HTTG is brought up by “dude” and all the above bloggers is probably because that’s the only other Korean drama that any TVXQ members participated! That’s a natural benchmark to use, and not because anyone has anything against Yunho.
Further, of course this is a “subjective” opinion – I believe that the purposes of comments in a website is to express our own opinion, which is by nature, subjective. Only “facts” such that it was voted as one of the most anticipated dramas, and the most-searched drama at naver are facts which are objective. Hence, I don’t think objectivity has any part to do in this discussion.
Lastly, I refrain from making assumptions but I am certainly not “bringing up HTTG just to make myself feel better” – I am not quite sure how you got this idea or how I wld feel better…or why you sound so defensive, but chill girl!
We should be watching SKK happily and doing SYC proud by behaving harmoniously

and just to let you know, I think there’s a misunderstanding…I wasn’t replying to you..i was replying to Dude…lol.
anyways, I agree that HTTG production/storyline/etc. was not good….but let’s not forget all the other factors that affected the ratings…this was shortly after the lawsuit, YH was filming HTTG WHILE doing a whole bunch of other DBSK related scheduels so they had to rush everything to catch up each week, there was also big competition such as Iris, YH chose a role to play that is unlikeable and literally a dummy which is alot harder to portray than a cool person, all the other main actors weren’t very well known and popular for their acting skills either so YH had no one to really look up to and get advice from, etc…etc.
I also like SKKS because of it’s cute characters and nice scenery, etc….but to be honest, I don’t think I’d watch this show if YC was not in it….I’m not really into historical dramas and stuff….I think that YC’s acting is the best out of the 5 after watching their banjun dramas and so on…YH comes in second tho.
I don’t know, to me it’s still unnecessary…they’re completely unrelated to one another..why compare and bring up how poorly HTTG did?….there’s really no point in my opinion….if people cared about YH and YH fans, they wouldn’t have said anything.
yes, I agree that almost everything is subjective, so I don’t like it when people make it seem as tho it’s not and that they’re giving an objective point of view or that all their opinions are 100% facts.
I believe HTTG was also most searched drama in it’s time prior to release.

In no way am i being defensive about yoochun’s drama by putting down httg, bcause i am natural. my fave member is neither. why being butthurt just because i put out some thoughts? to me, yunho really did badly in httg. I dont know about how he later improved, since i stopped at episode 3.. cant take it. Its too sleazy and i got to hide my face btw my palms when i watch. i’m not being bias, i’m just stating the truth of what i thought. to me, yunho’s acting ability. It sucks.. a lot. you’re judging YH based on that one character he portrayed..you do realize that he took on a role that required over-acting and is not very likeable to begin with right?….he had to act dumb and clueless…if he had taken on the typical role of asassin, cop, rich businessman, doctor, etc. I’m sure he would’ve done alot better…just look at “Goodbye My Love” MV….it’s alot easier to act out an expressionless cool guy compared to a dork.

Actually, why are we comparing ratings? Can we please focus on the most important thing: Yoochun’s acting.
I loved his acting! Some people might find it stiff but it fits perfectly with his character and when his character’s wall gradually crumbles after meeting Yoon Hee, we will definitely see Lee Sun Joon slowly coming out of his shell and being less stoic. Micky was in character and didn’t overdo Lee Sun Jun’s stern personality. He is believable. He didn’t exaggerate. I couldn’t be more pleased.

Nah…those airport pics were from before the drama was on-air. It might seem lower than our expectation but most of korean dramas start with not-so-good rating.
I think Yoochun said that he expected this drama could get 15% rating in the future. No sane actor would expect that much from the first episode. (Even Dong Yi started with 11%)
Let just hope that it would be up and up!

Drama is not something that Cassies can have much influence at all. Fans should understand that.
I agree that we shouldn’t compare Yunho’s drama with Yoochun’s. Both drama are far different from each other and aired in different circumstances.
(I would say SungKyunKwan Scandal might consider as starting with the worst time possible in 2010 with Dong Yi and Giant on their peak.)

yeah the drama and film world is completely different from the music world. the challenges are different and the people are different. fame in the music (aka idol..sigh..) world does not translate into instant recognition in the chungmuroo. even Rain worked his way from the very bottom – and not all of his k-dramas or movies are popular. but he is accepted because he proves that he can act pretty well – that in the end he got to work with famous directors too. so even if rating is low (atm, i believe), critical acceptance to a series’ quality (acting, production etc.) is also considered good. so far I read that the only drawback of SKKS is mainly the very tough competition (i’d say almost impossible) from the start but the overall production values are good.
maybe, it can achieve a you’re beautiful reputation, in any case – drawing a cult following to it.

I’ve watched the subbed ep. 1 and am COMPLETELY IN LOVE with it ^0^ ~~~!!!
This must be the BEST thing I’ve watched in a long time- at the very least the best so far this year!!!
Everything is good- the plots, the pace, the characters (ohhhhh *the characters*) and the acting! All the main characters are great and very likeable! Yoochun was very good actually, his stiff expression and righteous tone totally fit his role. I love all four of the main characters, like seriously!!!
So while the low rating is a disappointment, it has NOTHING to do with the quality of the drama IMO. The competitions are plainly too strong and the drama’s target market – students or adults in their twenties simply aren’t those who would necessarily watch a show when it airs (they watch shows online, when they have time/feel like to)! But I am sure the rating will increase once those two other popular drama series end, and good reviews of the drama have spreaded =)
Yoochun, don’t get discouraged or anything, you did a job and it was a GREAT choice to take part in this drama. I actually feel that I should thank Yoochun for if it weren’t for him, I might’ve missed out on this super cool drama X-D !!!

I have also finished watching!! If ratings determine the making and acting of those involved, WRONG!! People have to just watch to decide for themselves, and with the 2 BIG dramas at the same time slot, it may prove to be a little challenging, but seriously I think 4 of them portrayed their roles as depicted very well, and I still maintain my stand that Yoochun will definitely shine as an actor, even if it means going through lots of challenges with these ‘ratings’, and I actually appreciate that people see him as a newbie and not someone who is DBSK.
Seems to me that the target market is mainyl looking at the ‘young’ audience , and this should be taken into consideration for the ratings, as well as how you view the drama.
I can now totally understand why Junsu said that he is proud when he saw Chunnie acting…. he’s not wrong, give it a chance.

I agree! Although I haven’t watched it but I read news and reviews about SKKS and there’s nothing that really put down the drama except the fact that it faces rather impossible competition LOL..
I think a drama’s success can be seen in two ways – it can be rating, it can also be critical acceptance. I remember Joo Ji Hoon (Goong’s Shin) and Shin Minah’s drama (who’s now starring in Gumiho) The Devil was really poor in rating but it was critically accepted and still gave a lot of leeway to them to become respected actors.
If SKKS is critically accepted (maybe I am exaggerating as it is still such an early stage) – acting and production value wise – it’s fine by me. I just hope that they will be consistent and not be influenced by the rating too much.

People need to stop thinking that if all 800,000 k-cassies (btw, I don’t believe there are that many) sit in front of the tv and watches drama starring the dbsk boys, the rating will go up a lot.

For starter, 800,000 is just 1.6% of the 50 million population- of course it’s higher as a percentage of the drama-watching population it will be higher, but still it won’t be THAT significant a percentage.
Secondly, not all TVs in the country count when it comes to viewer rating- in fact only those who’ve agreed to place a box on top of their tv to allow survey agency companies to monitor what they watch, get counted. It’s a sampling process and not counting of exact number of viewers.
Thirdly, even if say a K-cassie has this said box on top of the tv at her house, what if her parents happen to be the many viewers who’ve been following DY and Giant loyally and send her to watch SKKS over the internet ^^;;;
Pls don’t place the burden of tv viewer rating on the k-cassies. Album and live ticket sales, then yes, to a degree. But tv viewer rating? It’s up to the general public’s liking and awareness of the drama ^^

I have not yet watched the drama properly without subs..but i have been watching most of the videos released..& i believe Micky’s acting to be very well done and believable..i also enjoyed watching even though i did not understand everything which was happening..Micky has improved a great amount with each role he’s been casted in..and will only get even more better..as the great actor which he has the potential to become..also its the first episode..and a new drama..so even though the ratings are not as high as we all were hoping for..it stills gives room for them to exceed as the drama progresses..i hope both he and the cast continues to think positively..and do their best..im really proud of him as well..Fight-o Micky!

its like storm in here…well about the ratings, does that tell us to go and watch it rather then complain this and that. the rating tell us to buy the DVD when it comes out and to always support the actors/actress and the crew. So when it air, switch on the TV, sit, watch and enjoy.

I haven’t got the chance to see the drama cos I got no access to it. But it is too quick too judge since t is only its first episode.
I personally hope that rating will go up and up each episode.

I really love this film, I don’t know why the rating was too low, but this film is so incredible with beautiful actrees and actors. I hope the rating will go up and up. Chunnie fighting!!!!!!!!!

i don’t think we should worry about the low ratings,i’m sure it’ll increase this week.
the whole drama definitely has an interesting plot,definitely not much of the cliche kind and it being a historical drama with a small modern twist,is indeed something new.we should all applaud their efforts,especially yoochun because it’s his first ever big drama.
though i can’t help to raise the ratings because i’m not from korea,but i’ll definitely watch it online,and i’ll buy the dvd when it’s released here (:
so i hope everyone continue to support the drama,regardless of whether you’re a dbsk fan or not,and if you’re a dbsk fan,you should support all of them,and not be biased.
